Report 2019

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT 2019

Once again the year started off with Shaldon winning the postponed 2018 County Trophy.

The BIBC international event was played at Ayr. Ollie, Ian and Lee played but England put up a poor show. Next year the event is at Llandrindod Wells with Lee and Ollie playing.

Shaldon once again provided ten bowlers for the Devon Middleton Cup squad which won the trophy for the fourth time in five years.

In the Major County Competitions Ryan beat Lee in the Two Wood and Steve and James won the pairs

Shaldon finished the competitions by winning the Top Club, three years in succession, and the 2019 County Trophy. Unfortunately the Foxlands eluded them.

In the Mid Devon League the A team, yet again, won the premier division, 18 times in twenty years, just missing 200 points by 3.The B team had an outstanding result finishing second in the second division but gaining promotion to the first. They had the best shot difference and the largest number of winning rinks.

The friendly Over 55’s Triples League saw the teams in the X and Y divisions coming 4th and 5th respectively.

For various reasons the ladies had difficulty in finding players for their various games and are encouraging all to put themselves forward whenever they can. They have decided to move their roll-up afternoon from Wednesday to Tuesday so that they can compete in the TTL on Wednesday morning and the LOFTL on the afternoon thus giving everyone more opportunity to play in the roll-ups. Congratulations to Anne Mears and Joan Wigginton for managing to fulfil the league team fixtures.

While focusing on the ladies, congratulations are in order for successfully hosting a visit by the Bowls Devon Ladies President. As with many aspects of this Club some ingenuity always has to be applied and in this case they had to run the game in the morning so that they could host a lunch in the Con Club. They did really well with the Presidents team praising their effort and from the club view they managed to self-fund it, well done.

In September we hosted three days of the Teignmouth Tournament. Brian Haywood and Alec Leggett gave their time to organise the matches. I would give my thanks to those who turned up to help me set-up and close-up the green. Incidentally all matches were played East to West with complements made about the rinks. Special thanks need to be made to Madeleine, Rita and all the other ladies who organised the catering, there were some wonderful sandwiches and cakes and most importantly they made a profit, again, well done.

Congratulations to everyone who has represented England, Devon and most of all Shaldon in the various competitions and leagues.
